![]() (A scam to be sure, but the Grinch is right about the broiling damage that can be done without proper UV skin care.)Īt the time, the Grinch wasn’t making the local “Who’s Who in Whoville?” ledger and his creator, Theodor Geisel, wasn’t making a living writing children’s books. It’s “worth a lot more than that old-fashioned sun,” says the Grinch. Seuss introduces the Grinch as a con artist selling a piece of string for 98 cents to a yellow-furred galoot out catching some rays. In 1955, a 33-line illustrated poem “The Hoobub and the Grinch” ran in Redbook magazine. He didn't even debut amidst the Jing-Tinglers of the season, but rather during the dog days of summer. He wasn’t on television, on stage, or even in a book. ![]() The first time readers young and old laid their eyes on the Grinch, he wasn’t green. ![]()

Rob lowe things i tell my friends5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Now, what was in Johnowen’s mind? Did he understand who the “president” is, why did he want to make a gift of his beloved frog Gwee Gwee? I should gently decline his gift, so he can keep it.” It would have been so easy for President Clinton to think, “I shouldn’t deprive a little boy of his special toy. I love this story because it’s a great example of how sometimes we can be generous by taking. Rob Lowe, Stories I Only Tell My Friends You can come visit him at the Clinton Library someday.” Have since I was a boy like you…I’ll keep him nice and safe. I bet you didn’t know, but I collect frogs. Sheryl and I look at each other in shock. “Well, look at this!” says the president. But now, he takes it out of his mouth and hands his old, tattered frog to the president. It has been his security blanket since he was an infant. My youngest son, Johnowen, is holding his stuffed frog, Gwee Gwee, which he never lets out of his sight, under any circumstances. ![]() On my last visit to the Clinton White House, I’m standing on the South Lawn with Sheryl and the boys talking to the president before he hops onto Marine One. It was very interesting for many reasons, and I was particularly struck by a story Lowe told, recalling a visit to the White House during his time on the show The West Wing: I’m not a particular fan (or not) of Rob Lowe, but several people had recommended his memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, so I decided to read it. ![]()

Operation Iron Valkyrie by Lucas Webber5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() But has perhaps had a wild past, or has some skeletons in her past, so she has been keeping men romantically at a distance. ![]() She is the girl with the overactive sex drive. Natsuki assesses Sophie as a 2 on the Kinsey scale. But she didn't really have time for men, she was all work and almost no play. literally experimented! She determined that she was a 1 on the Kinsey scale (0 being heterosexual and 6 being lesbian). In a very funny passage, she explains to the captain that she experimented in college. Doesn't really believe in soul mates and spiritual stuff. We have Natsuki - a Japanese scientist and all-around big brain beauty. And while in book 1, they were fleshed out with the quick broad strokes you would expect, in book 2 he adds more detail. He continues to flesh out the 3 girls he introduced us to in book 1. An author has only has so much page time, so you tend to get a group of blank slate girls rather than 2 or 3 very well fleshed out girls.īut Lucas Webber has decided to take a slower path, and I like it. ![]() ![]() I find with some books the personalities of the girls are hard to discern. You get from A to B, C, and D character-wise very quickly, and that is fine as far as things go, but it is nice sometimes to take things slower. Maybe readers are impatient these days, I am not sure. These days it seems like a lot of harem series are quick on the draw. ![]()

The gods of howl mountain5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Running liquor for his clan, Rory takes his job seriously. Nights are spent on the road with the purring of the Ford set as the sweetest of melodies. ![]() The mountain breeze runs through her veins as well as the moonshine that saturates its valley. ![]() Her dependence is solely upon the land, and her roots run as deep as any chestnut tree. The dirt of her land runs deep under her fingernails, and she can cure what ails anyone – if she so pleases to do so. A former prostitute who sold her body for practical means, she now makes her living as a healer or as some say, a shaman or witch. The woman who watches over the two young men has a steely eye and an even sassier mouth – Granny May Docherty, a bawdy firecracker of a female. The work is done lovingly and thoughtfully at the side of his old friend and expert mechanic each touch put upon the Ford a caress given as lovingly as though they were lovers. He spends his days tinkering on Maybelline, his precious retro-fitted Ford coupe. While the memories of Korea will haunt his nightmares forever the ghosts of friends lost and the faces of his enemies permeating the very air he breathes while both awake and asleep, Rory has been able to find a semblance of peace wrapped up in that mountain and the old, creaky home that resides there. Life after war has proven a tad unpredictable, but he’s been able to find solace in the whispers of the familiar mountain of his childhood. Making money as whiskey runner.Īnd perhaps, that dancing girl who makes hats. Rory Docherty cares for only a few things. ![]()

![]() With a bounty on Nilah, Boots sees her chance to climb out of her financial hole.įollowing the redemption arc premise, neither Nilah nor Boots are particularly likable at the beginning of the story, and judging by the reviews, this can be a barrier for some. When someone at the racetrack dies in an unheard-of event, Nilah is blamed and her only clue is Boots. Meanwhile, in the post-war PTSD story, Boots, former Lieutenant, is dodging her old captain, who undoubtedly wants payback after she sold him some bogus treasure maps. ![]() ![]() Over in the personal growth story, it begins Fast and Furious, with Nilah, a car-racing champion, successfully dodging an accident on the track. Although initially slow to grab me, in the end I found it both unpredictable and enjoyable. This is the literary equivalent of the weekend action-adventure movie. ![]()

The Scream Factory by Kelly O'Rourke5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Not only that, but Michael Myers still lives, and is believed to have resumed his killing spree in Haddonfield less than a year ago. Whatever could have possessed teenaged Mary White’s parents to not only move to a town with a bleak and fearful past like Haddonfield, Illinois, but to move into the actual house where spree killer Michael Myers at age six murdered his older sister and subsequently returned several times over the next twenty years to wreak further havoc, is beyond my understanding. ![]() We’re dealing with an entirely new set of characters in a very different situation…though still with the same powerful, psychopathic antagonist ruthlessly hunting them. Did they go on to attend a nearby college, or did they move away from Haddonfield entirely, eager to leave the specter of the still-living Michael Myers far behind in their rearview mirrors? One couldn’t blame them if they did choose to leave town after the horrors that they faced at the hands of Michael Myers, but we don’t find out the answer to that question either way in The Old Myers Place. The survivors of that new Halloween night massacre have now graduated from high school, but we can’t be sure what happened to them after that. A year has passed since Lori Parker and her friends were terrorized by the return of Michael Myers in The Scream Factory. ![]()

![]() A few pages later this same recently introduced character jumps out of the comic, never to be mentioned again. At one point Batman flat out socks an innocent child in the face, seemingly at terminal velocity. The final battle lends itself to some gorgeous panels but it’s highly confused at times and too unevenly matched to live up to its own hype. Despite Bullock’s claims that “The answer was right under nose” there’s a lack of clarity in the reveal that leaves you feeling one step behind all throughout. ![]() The issue is very rushed, partly to accommodate some of the more striking visuals. Unfortunately, that plot structure really only works if the mystery has already been revealed. Written by a pair of artists, the book’s layouts build with the tension, leading to a pair of dramatic arrangements that really convey the showdown nature of the issue. It makes you want more, makes this issue feel big and meaningful. That sense of momentum is a great asset for the book. Nonetheless, from the moment this issue opens there’s a sense that you’re racing towards the finale. ![]() Well, perhaps more accurately, Tec #33 ended with one. ![]() The Review: Detective Comics #34 starts with a bang.
